Channing, TX
A paymaster for the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway, George Channing Rivers, founded the town of Channing in the Texas Panhandle in 1888, with the original name being “Rivers” changed later in the same year. It was once a part of the infamous XIT Ranch that took up land in an astounding ten different counties.
The business district was platted in 1891 by Willis D. Twitchell and, at that time, was the XIT headquarters. The town had attracted enough residents by 1900 that two stores, a post office, a lumber yard, and a school had opened. It became the county seat after two elections were held to replace Hartley. In 1903, cowboys of the XIT Ranch mounted wheels on the courthouse, and it was pulled to Channing. One of the Panhandle’s first public libraries was opened in Channing by a women’s club in 1908 when the population was around 600.
Following the liquidation of XIT Ranch in 1911, Channing’s economy took a hit. By the time of its incorporation in 1960, it had a population of 390.
Located in Hartley County, Channing currently has a population of 265 residents (2022) and occupies the zip code 79018. The Channing Independent School District serves students in grades K through 12 at one location called Channing School.
The district covers the southern and western portions of Hartley County and the northern part of Oldham County. A 1940s NFL player named Walt Schlinkman is one of the most well-known people from the town.
