Part of Amarillo’s metropolitan statistical area, Canyon, TX, is located in Randall County in the zip codes 79015 and 79016. Situated south of Amarillo, the town takes up a little under 8 square miles of land but has a population of over 15,000 residents thanks to the West Texas A&M University campus located in the town.
The university has changed its name five times since its creation. It was first known as West Texas State Normal College, then in 1923, its name was changed to West Texas State Teachers College. In 1949, it was changed to West Texas State College, then West Texas State University in 1963, and finally, in 1993, the school joined Texas A&M’s university system and was named West Texas A&M.
The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is a part of the University and sits on the south end of campus. The performance Texas, which takes place inside Palo Duro Canyon State Park, has its box office and mailing address in Canyon as well. When you’re passing through, make sure to pay Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
The Canyon Independent School District serves 732 square miles of land in Canyon and Amarillo. There are three high schools part of the 23 campuses that are part of the district. Randall High School and West Plains High School are the high schools of Canyon ISD.
Midway Alternative High School and Canyon ISD Career Academy are also included. Canyon Junior High School, Randall Junior High School, and West Plains Junior High School are the junior high schools of the district.
The district has four intermediate schools, including Canyon Intermediate School, Greenways Intermediate School, and Pinnacle Intermediate School.
The elementary schools are Arden Road Elementary School, City View Elementary School, Crestview Elementary School, Gene Howe Elementary School, Heritage Hills Elementary School, Hillside Elementary School, Lakeview Elementary School, Reeves-Hinger Elementary School, Spring Canyon Elementary School, Sundown Lane Elementary School.
There are two disciplinary schools in the district, including the Youth Center of the High Plains and the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program.
