Umbarger was founded by German immigrants who arrived on the farm and named their new town after John Umbarger, who owned both a general store and a post office. Today, Umbarger remains a predominantly German-American community, celebrating its heritage annually during Oktoberfest celebrations.
One of the town’s major industries is agriculture, with wheat, corn, and sorghum being grown as primary crops in the area. Many residents of the town either work directly in this industry or have jobs related to it. Additionally, it boasts an expansive cattle feedlot which is one of the primary employers within its borders.
Although Umbarger is relatively small in size, its community spirit remains strong thanks to a number of events and organizations that bring people together. Notably, Oktoberfest draws thousands every year; other notable celebrations include Fourth of July events, Christmas parades, and numerous other community activities held year-round.
Umbarger is served by the Canyon Independent School District, but some residents travel to Hereford for education.
