Floydada, TX

Referred to as the “Pumpkin Capital of Texas,” Floydada is located in Floyd County on the high plains of the Llano Estacado in the zip code 79235. The climate of the region is dry and cool in the fall, making it the perfect environment for growing fall vegetables like pumpkins and squash. When Francisco Vázquez de Coronado led his people through the area back in the 1500s, it is said that the natives helped keep them from starving by feeding them pumpkins. When business was booming from the 1960s until the 1980s, pumpkins could be found being harvested by over 30 farmers. Today, only four farmers in the region are known for growing this crop.

Home to a population of about 2,600, the town’s educational system is run by the Floydada Independent School District. The district is comprised of three schools, including A.B. Duncan Elementary, which absorbed R.C Andrews Elementary School in 2009, Floydada Junior High Schoo, and Floydad High School. The district offers extracurricular activities to its students ranging from musical, educational, and athletic programs such as band, baseball, basketball, Business Professionals of America, cheerleading, cross country, football, FFA, golf, NHS, One Act Play, powerlifting, softball, tennis, Texas Association of Future Educators, track, and UIL.

The Floydada Independent School District began serving the community of Dougherty, TX in July of 1987. South Plains Independent School District merged with Floydada the following year. The district gained the recognition of the world-renowned technology company Apple in the 2007-2008 school year when it was one of 17 districts in the nation awarded the Apple Distinguished School Award. Leading up to this, the schools in the district began participating in the Texas Immersion Pilot Project in 2004 and obtained the ability to give laptops to students through the TxTIP, and with local money, a year later, the project was extended to Floydada High School.

Floydada is home to an oddity called the Boston Terrier Museum, which showcases an abundance of memorabilia and treasures dedicated to the beloved dog breed. The museum came about because of a man named Bob Hambright’s late wife Francis’s love for collection pieces featuring the Boston Terrier. Throughout the years, she had collected a considerable amount of objects, and once she passed, Bob kept the tradition alive. Soon enough, Mr. Hambright was in need of a larger space to house his collection thus, the Boston Terrier Museum was born. The museum is located at 206 West Houston, Floydada, TX 79235.
