Amarillo, TX
In response to the golden fields of wheat that populated the area, settlers of the High Plains gave a newly forming community in the Texas Panhandle the Spanish name of Amarillo, which translates to “yellow” in the language.
The Amarillo area is home to over 200,000 residents in the Texas Panhandle. Public education students in the city attend schools in the Amarillo Independent School District which covers about 70 square miles. There are 56 school facilities that make up the district, including four high schools. These are Amarillo High School, Caprock High School, Palo Duro High School, and Tascosa High School. Each high school has at least two middle schools that feed into it.
Tascosa, which is the one with the biggest student population, receives its students from three different middle schools, including Austin Middle School, de Zavala Middle School, and Houston Middle School. Amarillo High School’s students come from Bonham Middle School and Crockett Middle School, Caprock High School is made up of students from Bowie Middle School and Fannin Middle School, and Palo Duro High School has students from Mann Middle School and Travis Middle School.
There are also several surrounding school districts serving the area in and around Amarillo, including River Road Independent School District, Highland Park Independent School District, Bushland Independent School District, and Boys Ranch Independent School District.
Amarillo also has its own local community college, Amarillo College, which has seven different campuses, three of which are outside of city limits. There is a Hereford Campus as well as two Moore County Campuses located in Dumas, TX.
