Amherst, TX
Amherst is located in Lamb County, zip code 79312.
As a small town in the southwest part of the Texas Panhandle, Amherst is home to a population of around 650 residents. Originally, the town was formed in 1913 as a railway station for the ranching empire Mashed O Ranch. Plant X, one of the Southwestern Public Services’ largest energy producers, sits to the north of Amherst, about nine miles down the road.
The town is situated along US 84 and the BNSF Railway. A post office began operations in 1924, and by the 1930s, a few businesses had opened up shop. The community had grown to a little under a thousand residents, but it wasn’t until 1970 when the population was about 140 people smaller, that the town of Amherst was incorporated.
At one point in time, the town’s oldest building which was a hotel at the time was the busiest stopping point between Lubbock, TX, and Clovis, NM. A few cotton gins and two grain elevators were in the town by the 1980s, and the population had risen to 971.
With less than a square mile of land encompassing the town, the town is home to the Amherst Christian Retreat Center, which hosts the Walk to Emmaus Christian program.
The Amherst Independent School District consists of only one high school, Amherst High School, ranging in grades from Pre-K to 12th. The district is classified as 1-A, and the mascot is a bulldog.
