Cactus, TX
The town of Cactus, TX, sits north of Dumas and is located in Moore County. Encompassing the zip code 79013, the town is located in the northern part of the Texas Panhandle and is home to around 3,000 people.
Because of its smaller sized population, Cactus is a part of the Dumas Independent School District along with other, more rural regions of Moore County.
A large part of Cactus’ economy is driven by the beef production in the town. While it might be a small and somewhat unremarkable sight, Cactus is widely known for its feed yard (similar to Hereford.) Cactus Feeders, located in the western part of the town, is a major player in the beef supply industry in the United States.
Given the population, an individual would not assume the area of the town only comprises two square miles of land. Unfortunately, in 2007, 16 different tornados made their way through the panhandle, one of them being an EF2 that found and took its rath out on Cactus itself. While the other towns that got hit had only minor injuries reported, Cactus was affected in a more significant way. Along with one-third of the town being either destroyed or trashed by the mile-wide tornado, 14 people were injured.
